A poor old indebted farmer from Maharashtra named Tukaram is grief-stricken when his son commits suicide due to the failing crops and their worsening financial situation. The dumb-founded villagers, all caught up in a hapless situation, mourn his death but remain unsurprised by it. Old Tukaram tries to seek justice for his son but his pleas fall on deaf ears. It is then that he decides to end his own life, but not before he goes to Mumbai to wake up the dormant government and to ensure that his voice is heard, loud and clear, by the entire nation.
